Over 100 Evacuated Shelter Dogs in Florida Take Comfort in Donated Blankets and Toys

Florida is still recovering from not one but two powerful hurricanes that made landfall a month ago and wreaked havoc on the Gulf Coast. Helene and Milton destroyed countless homes and displaced thousands of people and pets.

Over one hundred shelter dogs evacuated prior and after Milton were taken in by Alaqua Animal Refuge in Freeport, even though they were already near capacity.

The sanctuary was still building emergency kennels as evacuated dogs continued to arrive. Thankfully, people near and far stepped up to help.

Thanks to your support, Greater Good Charities was able to provide pallets of pet food, soft blankets, toys, treats, and even cat castles.

Evacuated dogs like Phil, Dave, and Meg send their thanks and so do the volunteers and staff at the sanctuary.

They told us, "Thanks to an imperative donation from Greater Good the dogs were met with comfortable fleece blankets to lay on and rest after their long journey. They also received dog toys to keep them busy and enriched during their kennel time as well as bowls and treats and of course, food! We cannot thank Greater Good Charities enough for helping us during this incredibly difficult situation. Without their donation we would not have had the supplies needed to properly care for the evacuees."

The cats in their care were also treated to toys and treats. When they are not lounging in the donated cardboard cat castles, they are playing with the interactive toys to the delight of both the felines and staff.

"These felt snake toys have been a huge hit with the feline crew. With all of the extra care involved with taking care of dogs evacuated to us from Hurricane Milton we are so thankful the cats are also getting some extra spoiling. Thank you Greater Good!"

They are currently 79 animals over capacity and need help. They are asking people to adopt, foster, volunteer, or donate. Check out all the adoptable animals here

Your donations have already helped feed countless pets - thank you! Join us in feeding even more shelter and displaced pets in areas hit by Helene and Milton. The recovery process has just begun and there are so many hungry dogs and cats to feed. Donate now!
