Asheville Humane Society Delivers Donated Food to Pets in Destroyed Areas After Hurricane Helene

Recovery efforts are ongoing in Western North Carolina that was devastated by Hurricane Helene. Many people and pets are struggling and are relying on the community to help them in this time of need.

Asheville Humane Society is a safe haven for displaced pets and thanks to your donations they are able to provide food and supplies to people and pets in need.

The shelter's Community Solutions team is taking it a step further by navigating damaged roads, flooding, and other hazards to reach people and pets currently unable to get out to get supplies.

The team is made up of heroes who are devoted to not only animals but their community. The shelter posted the details of a ride-along with longtime team member Lara.

Lara knows the area like the back of her hand since she has been helping and checking in on these people for years. She didn't need a list or GPS to tell her what was needed or where to go.

She loaded up her vehicle with pet food and supplies and headed out while effortlessly navigating detours to get to "her people".

The first stop was at a home in Swannanoa to deliver several bags of pet food to a man who "loads up a wagon regularly to distribute pet food to animals in his neighborhood."

The items were dropped off on his porch, but they couldn't leave until they said hello to another familiar face.

"Lara finished out the stop by going back to her trunk saying 'I always bring a treat for Bob. I love Bob.' She pulled out a plush toy and a dental chew. We made our way around the back to a sweet wiggly dog who immediately 'awhooed' upon seeing Lara. After some obligatory pets, we were off again," shared the shelter.
The next stop was in Black Mountain. Pallets worth of pet food were delivered to help the community feed their beloved pets.

The final stop of the day was at woman's home that Lara visits often. "Despite losing her vision, this woman cares for 5 animals. Lara loaded her up with food in smaller bags for easier carrying and we left as Lara reminded herself to check on her again later."

This is heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. All of this occurred in just one day of giving back. It definitely restores your faith in humanity, and we want to thank all involved.

The shelter praised their dedicated team who are "the heart of our organization". Even through all the devastation and loss, they continue to be a much-needed resource for people and pets in need.

"The Asheville Humane Society isn’t just a shelter, it’s a community. It’s a broad effort dedicated to keeping people and their pets together. It’s ensuring no pet goes hungry or without the medical care they need. The hurricane has only emphasized the importance of our work in the greater community," posted the shelter.

It takes a village, literally, to care for all the displaced and stray animals. Your generosity has lent a helping hand, and the shelter and recipients are grateful.

The shelter wrote, "Thank you to Greater Good Charities for providing us with the supplies (and emotional support!) We needed to make this happen. We are so grateful!"
