In Richmond, Virginia, a two-year-old dog named Belle Kara was discovered alive five days after her owner passed away. Authorities were initially called to the apartment to serve an eviction notice when they found Belle Kara alone with her deceased owner, The Washington Post reports.

Richmond Animal Care and Control (RACC) responded to a distressing call. Upon entering the residence, shelter staff found Belle Kara, who had been living without her owner for several days.

Despite the grim circumstances, Belle Kara showed remarkable resilience. Initially anxious and tepid, she soon adapted to her new environment, displaying a sweet and gentle demeanor.
"She was very sweet—a little shocked, but kind and happy for her bath and the attention she received from our team," Peters told Newsweek.
The Shelter's Efforts
RACC made attempts to contact Belle Kara’s family, but no relatives were able to take her in. Consequently, a relative signed Belle Kara over to the shelter, allowing her to become available for adoption. The shelter then took to their Facebook page to share her story, hoping to find her a loving home.

The response was overwhelming. Hundreds of people liked and shared Belle Kara’s story, with many leaving heartfelt comments and adoption requests. Among the responders was Kate O’Bier from Mechanicsville, Va., who immediately felt a connection with Belle Kara.
“I didn’t even see the story, I just saw the dog and I was like, ‘That’s the one!’” O’Bier recounted to The Washington Post.
A Serendipitous Connection
O’Bier, who had been hoping to add another dog to her family, found Belle Kara’s story particularly moving. Her family, which includes her husband, their nine-year-old son, and their three-year-old dog, Tess, seemed like the perfect fit for Belle Kara’s energetic and friendly nature.
“These folks sent the sweetest email,” Peters told Newsweek.
Belle's New Beginning
Belle Kara was adopted on October 10, coinciding with her third birthday. The transition to her new home was smooth, thanks to her intelligence and the loving attention from her new family.“She is so smart, she picked up on the training so quickly,” O’Bier said.
Belle and Tess have since become inseparable companions, enriching each other's lives. “They’re pretty much inseparable,” O’Bier told The Washington Post.
