Boston Gathers to Honor the Dog Who Helped Survivors Stand Again

On a winter afternoon in Copley Square, a crowd gathered to honor a black Labrador whose quiet devotion helped reshape a shattered life. Rescue, the service dog who supported Boston Marathon bombing survivor Jessica Kensky for more than a decade, was celebrated with a public memorial at the Boston Public Library, The Boston Globe reports.

Rescue was a trained service dog who supported a Boston Marathon bombing survivor.

Rescue died last September at age 13. The event was filled quickly, a reflection of how far his impact reached.

Kensky and her husband, Patrick Downes, were married just seven months when the 2013 bombing took both of their left legs. Recovery was slow, painful, and isolating. Six months after the attack, a two-year-old black Lab trained by NEADS World Class Service Dogs entered their lives, according to WCVB.

The shift was immediate.

“We were laughing so hard,” Downes told The Boston Globe. “And as I was laughing, I also started to cry because I hadn’t had positive emotions like that for a long time.”

Work That Went Beyond Training

Rescue was trained to perform daily tasks that restored independence. He opened doors, picked up dropped keys, pressed elevator buttons, and steadied Kensky as she moved through public spaces. When she said, “Brr, I’m cold,” he brought her a blanket, NPR reported during Kensky’s first year of recovery.

But the emotional weight mattered just as much.

“I didn’t know how to navigate a world that wasn’t built for me anymore,” Kensky told The Boston Globe.

Downes later explained that Rescue gave Kensky the confidence to go out alone again. For a long time, that felt impossible without support from family or friends.

Sleep returned, too. “The first time I slept through the night after the bombing was when Rescue came home with us,” Kensky told NPR.

A Public Role Rooted in Quiet Moments

Rescue also changed how strangers interacted with the couple. His presence softened conversations that once felt heavy. People asked what he could do. Smiles followed.

That openness extended into classrooms. Kensky and Downes co-authored *Rescue & Jessica: A Life-Changing Friendship*, a children’s book inspired by their partnership. The story helped young readers understand disability without centering violence, WCVB reports.

In 2017, Rescue was named ASPCA Dog of the Year. He was “the full package,” ASPCA president Matt Bershadker told TODAY, explaining that Rescue made Kensky’s life easier “in ways that we never could’ve contemplated.”

“He represents all the service dogs out there doing extraordinary things for people,” Bershadker added.

A Farewell Filled With Gratitude

The Boston Public Library celebration featured trainers who helped prepare Rescue for working life, a reading of the book, and stories that balanced grief with humor, WCVB reports.

Rescue retired in his later years. Kensky cared for him until the end.

“Rescue was a lot of work at the end,” she told The Boston Globe, “but he still loved going outside for his walks.”

On Saturday, the city that once witnessed unimaginable loss gathered to say thank you.
