Chimney Rock State Park is located just 25 miles outside of Asheville and provides breathtaking mountain and Lake Lure views. It is a popular tourist destination with many people making the climb to the top to take in the beauty around them.

Sadly, Hurricane Helene decimated the area with most of Chimney Rock Village ending up in Lake Lure. Rescue efforts continue in search of survivors. The massive storm has claimed the lives of over 190 people and countless pets.

Hundreds are still missing, and the people of North Carolina need a glimmer of hope. That is why the State Park team made their way through the downed trees and destruction to raise the flag on top of Chimney Rock.

The park is closed due to the devastation in the area but the team posted on Facebook, "Amidst the unimaginable tragedy our region and community are experiencing, we want to thank our State Parks team, who made it to the Rock and proudly raised the flag as a beacon of hope for all of Western North Carolina."

The image taken on Monday, September 30, has gone viral. Past visitors took to the comments to share their heartbreak over the loss.  One person wrote, "Prayers for Chimney Rock. It holds a special place in my heart. The flag is a symbol that you will stand strong and rebuild. Praying!!"

Concerned supporters reached out to the park after Helene tore through to check on staff. The team responded with an update. They said, "We want to thank all of you who have reached out, shared your concern, and asked how to help.

"We are very grateful that all of our staff is safe and sound. This includes our animal ambassadors who were evacuated prior to the storm.
"We are absolutely devastated. Our hearts are with our friends and family in the Hickory Nut Gorge, especially those with businesses and homes in the Chimney Rock Village."
