Pueblo Fire Department responded to a house fire on August 2nd just after 7:30 p.m. Firefighters were told two adult dogs, a litter of puppies, and a pet rat were inside in need of rescuing. 

Firefighters leaped into action battling the flames and entering the home to save the animals trapped inside. They shared in a Facebook post, "The fire was quickly extinguished and search crews managed to save 7 puppies and a pet rat in a cage with some receiving CPR and supplemental oxygen for smoke inhalation."

Sadly, two adult dogs and one puppy did not survive. The owner was not home at the time of the fire, and the cause is still being investigated. 

In the meantime, the rescued animals were taken to a vet clinic where they were treated and then released to Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region.  

The rescue shared that the puppies are doing well as they keep a close watch on them. They wrote, "Our hearts are with the family who lost their pets in this fire, and our deepest thanks go to the Pueblo Fire Department for their courage and speed; without them, this story would look very different. We've been in touch with the owner and hope to reunite them soon!"

Several people thanked the firefighters for entering the burning home to save the puppies and pet rat. Firefighters are heroes who wear helmets instead of capes.
