Doe’s Christmas Store Rampage Ends in a Heart-Pounding Rescue
Matthew Russell
Shoppers were not the only ones drawn to a Tennessee holiday store this season. A startled doe crashed through the front door of Gabriel’s Christmas and More in Jonesborough just after dawn and sent ornaments rattling as she sprinted through displays early Friday morning, authorities said.
Police video captured the chaos as officers scrambled between shelves while the deer tore down aisles. The Jonesborough Police Department later joked that the doe “sniffed the ornaments, inspected the garland, side-eyed a nutcracker, and galloped around like she was trying to remember where she parked the sleigh,” the department’s Facebook post stated.

A Chaotic Chase Through Holiday Displays
The store’s team initially thought the commotion was a prank. “Our sweet Christmas store got invaded by a deer… nobody thought it was real,” merchandiser Lisa Melancon told WJHL-TV. She added with a grin that the doe might have simply been behind on her shopping list.
Officers tried coaxing the animal back toward the entrance, but the doe bolted in circles, hooves clattering against glass cases. At one point, her frantic sprint disappeared off camera, but the sound of merchandise shaking marked her path, PEOPLE reports.

Rescue Comes After the Doe Gets Stuck
The chase ended abruptly when the deer wedged herself inside the frame of a wooden chair behind the counter. Officer Adam Depew told WJHL-TV he seized the moment. “I just said I was going to grab it. What other choice do we got? So she goes in the chair and I was like, ‘gotcha.’”
Officers lifted her carefully by her legs and carried her toward the front, UPI reports. Because the keyed door had locked behind her, police guided the doe back through the broken entry window.
The moment she touched pavement, she sprinted away.
A New Mascot for the Season
No injuries were reported. Staff later nicknamed the unexpected visitor “Jingles,” a nod to her impulsive holiday visit. Melancon said the name fits.
“She probably wanted to come and do some shopping and get some last-minute gifts, and she knew where to come,” she told PEOPLE.
Jingles has not returned, but a plush reindeer now stands at the entrance as the shop’s unofficial mascot, commemorating the morning a doe brought a burst of wild Christmas cheer.
