As wildfires quickly spread across Los Angeles, horse owners frantically loaded up their horses and headed away from the encroaching flames. Others were unable to get to their horses and reached out for help hauling their horses to safety.

Some horses broke free or were set free as a last option to escape the deadly fires. Loose horses were taken in by Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control (DACC) who brought them to Los Angeles Equestrian Center, which is one of the evacuation centers for displaced horses.

The staff at the center have opened their stalls and hearts to over 300 horses. Some were brought to the center by their owners and others were found running loose by local law enforcement.

Many of the horses lost their homes, arrived injured, and need immediate and long-term care.

Over 37,000 acres have been burned by the raging infernos with the largest ones, Palisades and Eaton, still spreading. The devastation is heartbreaking and more animals continue to arrive in need of medical care.

Jennie Nevin, staff member at the center, called it an "unprecedented" event that will take weeks and months for the horses to recover from.

Greater Good Charities' Disaster Response Team is on the ground and offering feed, pharmaceuticals, and support to Los Angeles Equestrian Center and those displaced by the fires.
