Firefighters can heroically save homes and businesses, put their lives on the line to rescue people and pets from burning buildings, and even save a deer that finds itself in an icy predicament.
In a recent Facebook post, the Lynchburg Fire Department in Virginia shared photos of a frigid wildlife rescue. According to the post, a deer was wandering on a frozen pond when the ice gave way, and she got stuck after falling through. Concerned residents saw that she needed help and called it in.
The fire department promptly sent a crew of four to rescue the distressed doe. They said they borrowed a boat to do so.
“It all comes with the territory!” they wrote.
Photos show the firefighters paddling amid broken ice sheets to reach the deer. They say they were able to free her, ensure she got safely to dry land, and get a bit of a workout themselves before heading back to the station.
When it comes to the somewhat atypical fire department rescue, they say they responded “because every life matters.”
