Good Pack Backpacks Help Homeless People and Wildfire Victims in Maui

For several months, the aftereffects of the wildfires in Maui have been continuing to cause difficulties for the people there. More than 5,000 residents were displaced by the fires, and around 1,500 families left the island for good following the catastrophe. Many people ended up sleeping in their cars while they searched for places for their families to stay, and some still do not have stable housing.

Thanks in part to donations from readers like you, our non-profit partner, Greater Good Charities, was able to fly in humanitarian and pet supplies shortly after the fires. Then, over the next few months, they worked to fly out pets from the Maui Humane Society, taking them to the Pacific Northwest and California to make more space for animals who were displaced and injured during the fires. They've conducted spay-and-neuter clinics to curb stray pet populations and care for pets. They've also provided backpacks and school supplies to high school students, many of whom had lost their homes. Contributions from donors make all these things possible.

SUPPORT HAWAIIANS IN NEED

GreaterGood, in partnership with Greater Good Charities and the Maui Humane Society, has been working to help the displaced victims of the fires, as well as the homeless people and animals in the area. We remain committed to helping where it is needed in Maui during this turbulent time.

Most recently, the Greater Good Charities team traveled to Maui to distribute Good Packs to those in need. The Good Packs are full of essential supplies and comfort items, including socks, sunscreen, toothpaste, toothbrushes, razors, soaps, and other toiletries. There were also subpacks available for pets, and these smaller packages included pet food, leashes, toys, and more.

SUPPORT HAWAIIANS IN NEED

The GGC team spent several days traveling between hotels, beaches, and parks, to distribute more than 500 Good Packs to individuals and families who are still displaced and struggling more than six months after the disaster.

Denise Bash, GGC’s VP of Pet Programs, who went to Maui for the distribution, says, “I saw some tears, I got many hugs, I sat with many of them and talked...they were incredibly thankful.”

It's apparent that Maui is still in need of help, and they're very grateful for every ounce of support that we're able to send our way. We're honored to continue to give in one of the places it's needed most, and you can help!
