Pvt. Isabella Gonzales had barely entered adulthood when an Iranian missile struck the military base she was helping protect. 

The 19-year-old Army soldier from Carrollton, Texas, was killed during an attack on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan. The Pentagon confirmed her identity three days later and released an official portrait of the young private, according to CBS News Texas.

Gonzales was supporting Operation Inherent Resolve, the long-running U.S. mission against the Islamic State group. She was assigned to an Army unit based in Ansbach, Germany, NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth reports.

Iranian Missile Barrage Claims American Lives

Gonzales died during a series of Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks against the Jordanian base. First Lt. Tyler James Feehan, 25, of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, was also killed during the weekend strikes.

Four other American service members were hospitalized and later released. Unidentified remains were also recovered as investigators worked to determine whether another soldier had died, according to the San Antonio Express-News.

The missiles reportedly struck prefabricated housing used by troops. The attack exposed the danger faced by tens of thousands of U.S. personnel stationed across the region despite layered air-defense systems, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Another American soldier was killed during the attacks in Jordan.

U.S. And Iran Expand A Deadly Regional War

American forces responded with fresh strikes against targets in southern Iran, including missile infrastructure, tunnels and facilities near the Strait of Hormuz. The attacks also damaged electricity, transportation and desalination systems, according to The Associated Press.

Iran has continued to target U.S. bases and American allies across Jordan, Bahrain and Kuwait. The fighting has also reached commercial shipping lanes. Attacks and blockades near the Strait of Hormuz have disrupted energy exports and pushed oil prices higher, Reuters reports.

A 19-Year-Old Becomes A Symbol Of War’s Cost

Nearly 100 American troops were injured during the latest weeks of Iranian reprisals. Most returned to duty, but the growing casualty count shows how quickly missile warfare can turn distant strategy into personal loss.

For Gonzales’ community in North Texas, that loss now has a name and a face. She left home as a teenager to serve abroad. She died while helping defend other Americans from an incoming strike.
