February 4 was World Cancer Day, and one actress chose to mark the occasion by sharing her personal story.
Kara Lindsay, the stage star known for her parts in plays like Newsies and Wicked, took to Instagram on February 4 to announce that she has been undergoing treatment for stage II breast cancer.
She wrote, “Before I go further, I’m going to be ok. I feel very lucky that I caught this early and I will be on the other side of this very soon.”
According to the 39-year-old’s post, she has undergone eight rounds of chemo, which wrapped up on January 30. Along with the post, she shared a poem her mother had given her, titled “What Cancer Cannot Do.” Lines include that it can’t cripple love, silence courage, or invade the soul.
Lindsay added her own similar thoughts, writing, “I have no hair, but I still have my spirit and my joy. I’m trying to find as much light in this dark time as possible.”
Lindsay, who is married with one young child, shared pictures from a photoshoot a few days later. The photos show her without her hair. In that post, she said sharing her story was freeing and that this battle is now a part of the fabric of who she is.
She added that there is still more to do on her road to recovery, but “For now, the only thing I have control over is how I walk through this. Walking through with my bald head held high!”
At 39, Lindsay is on the younger side of those facing a breast cancer diagnosis, but it is becoming more common. According to a recent report from the American Cancer Society, breast cancer rates in women under 50 increased by 1.4% each year between 2012 and 2021. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that about 10% of new breast cancer cases are diagnosed in women under 45.
