A man in Kentucky is cancer-free after being the first patient in the world to undergo a new form of cancer therapy.

John Hornsby Sr. lives in Latonia, Kentucky with his wife, Tamison, and several years ago, he got the news that no one wants to hear: He had cancer.

After suffering from stomach pain and sickness for nearly half a year, John was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Surgery wasn't an option.

According to WCPO news, John's wife, Tamison, said: "They told us it was non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and that surgery wasn’t an option."

John added, "We cried for three days when I found out I had cancer, and I told her, I said, ‘That’s enough. I can’t take this crying. I can’t do it no more.'"

John ended up undergoing chemotherapy and went into remission, but the success was short-lived. Within 12 months, the cancer was back and it had spread. John went through more chemotherapy and went into remission again, only for the cancer to later return.

After nearly a decade of that and nine rounds of chemotherapy, Dr. Jim Essell prospected John to participate in a clinical trial for a new cancer therapy that takes a more targeted approach to treat B-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

The new treatment works by targeting T-cells to help kill the cancer without harming the rest of the body.

In June 2021, John became the first person in the world to try the treatment. Within 28 days of taking the treatment, John's cancer was undetectable. He was in remission and he's been cancer-free ever since.

The success of the treatment with John is promising and researchers are hoping to move forward with the second phase of clinical trials, a phase that involves testing on more people.
