People Barely Getting by After Hurricanes Break Down in Tears When Help Arrives

Hurricane Helene and Milton have claimed hundreds of lives and destroyed entire towns. Countless people and pets lost their home and all their belongings. They are having to make tough choices.

Livin’ Like Larry Farm Sanctuary in Florida has been helping people and pets in the community, even though their own facility sustained massive damage from the hurricanes.

Both of their shelters were destroyed as well as extensive damage to their fencing. They lost three months' worth of hay and many other supplies.

Greater Good Charities delivered truckloads of pet food and supplies to help the sanctuary and impacted families in the area, thanks to your donations

Repairs have begun at the sanctuary with the money saved. Staff and volunteers are also busy making sure not only the animals in their care are fed but are checking on their neighbors.

The reality is that many people are struggling and must choose between buying pet food or running their generator to preserve their food. Your generous support ensures that both the animals and people will have food.

"We’re seeing a lot of that with elderly and disabled veterans, they are living in RVs which can’t withstand a storm. They don’t evacuate because they are afraid they will come back to nothing. They’d rather stay and weather it out," the sanctuary shared.

One volunteer headed to a hard-hit mobile home community occupied mostly by veterans. These men and women won't ask for help but desperately need it. They are sharing what little food they have with their animals, and when the volunteer presented them with food, preventatives for their pets, and essential supplies many started to cry.

Volunteers recall, "They are in tears, they have such gratitude, they’re trying to give you donations, like they have half a case of water and they want to give you some, counting out quarters, they want to pay you with anything they have in their house to show gratitude, it’s humbling. I’ve had people offer their dog’s medication in case someone else needed it. I had some lady who wanted to give the tuna she got from the food bank."

There are so many people and pets in need of support during this hard time. It will take months and even years to rebuild.

Krystal Detty with Livin’ Like Larry Farm Sanctuary told us, "These donations are literally the difference between life and death for so many."

Over 500 families in the area are counting on these donations. Pets can stay with the people they love and get the food they need. Thank you for your continued support!
