Most Popular Dog Breeds of 2025
Andrea Powell
Most people pick a dog to add to their family based on size, activity level, personality, and breed. While for others it is either love at first sight or they are chosen by a dog.
We hope that everyone heads to their local shelter when they are ready to adopt a pet, and according to Rover, the largest online network of pet sitters and dog walkers, many are.
Rover just released the most popular dog breeds of 2025 based on their extensive database, with over 1 million dogs added in the last year.
Drum roll... the number one spot goes to mixed.

Rover shared, "With 49% of pet parents adopting from a shelter, it's not surprising that they've (again) taken the top spot."
Check out the top 20 breeds below.
- Mixed (rescues are the best!)
- Labrador Retriever
- Golden Retriever
- Goldendoodle
- German Shepherd
- Chihuahua
- French Bulldog
- Dachshund

It comes as no surprise that labs and goldens are at the top, but we are thrilled to see pit bulls on the list. Did your dog's breed make the list?

If not, no worries. There is a dog for every person no matter what the breed.
Rover also released a list of Top 10 Trending Dogs.

- American Staffordshire Terrier
- Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
- Toy Poodle
- Pug
- Australian Cattle Dog
- Pembroke Welsh Corgi

The report also included a survey of 1,000 U.S. pet parents revealing what traits they look for most. They found pet owners take size into consideration but there is one quality they value that all dogs are born with - loyalty.
They also shared, "Pet parents voted the Pit Bull as most photogenic and most likely to be trending on social media. The Golden Retriever and German Shepherd came in second and third, while the French Bulldog and Pug were identified as trending breeds on social media."
