On March 13, America celebrates National K9 Veterans Day to honor the contributions of military and working dogs throughout history. These loyal canines have been an integral part of the U.S. Armed Forces since 1942 when the Army began training dogs for the War Dog Program, also known as the "K-9 Corps."

The significance of National K9 Veterans Day dates back to March 13, 1942, when the U.S. Army officially began training dogs for military service, the US Army Quartermaster Foundation reports. This historic moment marked the first time that dogs were officially a part of the U.S. Armed Forces. The War Dog Program was initiated to train dogs as sentries for supply depots, messengers, and scouts. However, the capabilities of these four-legged soldiers quickly expanded, and their contributions during World War II proved to be invaluable.

Throughout history, dogs have been trained to serve our country in various roles, including search and rescue, detection, and combat, The Spruce Pets reports. K9 dogs have been an essential part of the military for many years and have been involved in many famous battles, including the raid on Osama bin Laden's compound, according to ABC News.

Some of the most famous military dogs in history include Sgt. Stubby, the original war dog; Chips, the most decorated dog in World War II; Lex, who retired with his fallen owner's family, and Cairo, the Navy SEAL working dog on the bin Laden raid. These canine heroes have played a crucial role in protecting our country and saving countless lives.

Military working dogs have been trained to perform various tasks such as detecting explosives and mines, tracking down enemy combatants, and protecting their handlers, the Department of Defense reports. They have been an essential component of U.S. military operations, especially during times of conflict.

While the contributions of military working dogs have been significant, they often go unrecognized. National K9 Veterans Day is a time to honor these courageous and loyal dogs who have served our country with distinction.

The history of military dogs goes back centuries, with ancient Egyptians taking dogs with them to battle as far back as 4000 B.C. Today, dogs continue to serve our country in many capacities, including assisting veterans with disabilities and providing emotional support to those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

GreaterGood is partnering with shelters and the Patriot Paws program to provide the proper tools to help better train the dogs in their care. Training is specialized for each dog which helps the dog meet the particular needs of the veteran that they will be paired with. These dogs will be helping veterans that have mobility limitations, post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injuries. The veterans will be helping these rescue pups by providing them with a home full of love! With a simple contribution you can change the lives of veterans and shelter dogs!

National K9 Veterans Day is a special day to commemorate the service and sacrifices of American military and working dogs throughout history. It is a time to reflect on the incredible contributions that these dogs have made to our country's military and law enforcement efforts. If you're looking for ways to observe this day, here are five ideas:

5. Adopt a retired K9 dog

Unfortunately, there are some retired K9 dogs that are left without homes after their service ends. If you're ready for a new furry friend, consider adopting one of these dogs instead of buying one from a breeder. You'll be providing a loving home for a dog that has already done so much for our country.

4. Share K9 stories on social media

Use social media to share stories of K9 dogs and their service. Spread awareness and appreciation for these furry heroes.

3. Attend a K9 Veterans Day event

Check your local community for events honoring K9 Veterans Day. Attend and show your support for these amazing dogs.

2. Thank a K9 dog

If you know a K9 dog or their handler, take a moment to thank them for their service. Their contributions are often overlooked, but they play an important role in keeping our country safe.

1. Support organizations that help K9 dogs and veterans

Consider donating to organizations that help retired K9 dogs or support the training and care of active-duty K9 dogs. These organizations play a vital role in ensuring that these heroic dogs receive the care and support they deserve.

Many homeless veterans are also caring for a beloved animal companion. These animals provide emotional support and comfort, yet the responsibility can bring added stress to a homeless veteran’s life. GreaterGood is supporting those who kept our homeland safe and now are themselves without a home and safety through Care Packs that let veterans and their animals know that we remember their sacrifice, and we will continue to work until every veteran is cared for appropriately.
