Nearly Blind Kitten Rescued From Woods Fights Back and Finds Hope

A woman in Emporia, Virginia, found a young tabby kitten alone in a wooded area and knew something was badly wrong. One of his eyes was bulging outward. The other was in trouble too.

With no transportation and no way to reach a veterinarian on her own, she called PETA for help. Fieldworkers rushed out, picked up the kitten, and brought him to PETA’s shelter in Norfolk. There, the tiny cat who would be named Bartimaeus, or Barti, began a fight for his life. PETA reports that Barti was only about 5 months old when he was found, nearly blind and suffering from a severe respiratory infection.

Why His Eyes Were in Such Danger

Eye damage like Barti’s can start with infections that spiral fast in young cats. The Cornell Feline Health Center notes that feline respiratory infections often bring conjunctivitis and eye discharge, which can thicken and worsen without proper treatment.

Cornell reports that conjunctivitis is the most common feline eye disorder and can cause swelling, redness, squinting, and dark discharge in one or both eyes. For a kitten outdoors and already sick, those symptoms can become a crisis fast.

The Surgery That Changed Everything

At the shelter, Barti’s right eye could not be saved. A veterinarian removed it, then started intensive treatment to protect the vision in his left eye. That kind of operation, called enucleation, is often used when an eye is severely injured or painfully beyond repair.

PetMD maintains that most enucleation incisions heal within 10 to 14 days, though newly sight-impaired animals may need a brief adjustment period. Barti got that chance in foster care, where he recovered indoors, gained strength, and learned how to live safely with one eye.

Now Barti Is Ready for a Home

The kitten who was once stumbling through the woods is now playful, vaccinated, neutered, and being described by his foster caregiver as affectionate and well adapted to indoor life. PETA’s adoption update says Barti enjoys lap time, gets along with his feline foster companions, and has even become comfortable with car rides.

His left eye has healed well, though future adopters may still need specialist follow-up. What began as a desperate rescue call has turned into something far rarer for a cat in his condition: a real shot at an ordinary, loved life.
