Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) deputies are being hailed heroes for rescuing a scared dog running in the street. 

Hurricane Milton bounded towards Florida's Gulf Coast as a massive Category 5 storm causing people to gather their belongings and pets and flee the area. 

As the storm approached, one local woman asked a friend to watch her 10-year-old Chihuahua named Roxie as she went back to her apartment to get her belongings. 

Her friend let Roxie outside to use the bathroom before the storm hit, but the little dog became frightened and ran off. 

Officers arrived to help capture Roxie who was racing around the street in the pouring rain.  

A video clip shared by HCSO shows Roxie outrunning the officers, but she was eventually caught. The rescue story was shared on the department's Facebook page with the caption, "We're here for our community- including our furry family members! Stay safe!

Roxie was reunited with her mom who wrote in the comments, "Thank you so much for saving my dog!" Her friend also thanked the officers for their help. 

Hurricane Milton made landfall as a Category 3 storm and the powerful winds caused massive damage to areas that were already hit by Helene.
