It had been a very long day for me, riding the bus back and forth from the capital city here in Costa Rica to my home. The bus takes a rest about halfway through the trip, so I got out to stretch my legs.

I was standing outside and I heard this tiny meow. I looked down and was almost overcome with tears. There was this tiny kitten, emaciated and very sick. She was covered in her own feces. Everyone was just walking past her and not paying her any attention. I couldn't do that.

I had a little towel in my bag, I wet it down and tried to clean her off a little. I could feel every bone in her tiny body. I couldn't leave her. So, I took her home. She was so thin that I could see the light coming through her skin in her legs. I told myself, even if she doesn't make it, at least she knew someone cared.

When I got her home, I made her some soft food and gave her water and a bath. She was so weak that she couldn't even hold up her head. I put her in the carrier, put that in the bathroom and then finally passed out from exhaustion. I couldn't get her to the vet that night - we have no 24-hour vets and we don't own a car.

I got up the next morning, and to my surprise, she was still alive. She dove into the food bowl! We immediately hopped on a bus with her and got to our vet. She was on medication and extra vitamins for a month. That was two years ago. She has been thriving ever since.

She has been an added joy to our household. She loves to cuddle and never tries to get outside. She is such a sweet kitty. I am glad that I was in the right place at the right time that day.
