After my husband's college reunion, we were enjoying a "Feel Better" meal at Waffle House. Upon exiting the restaurant, a loud bark caught my attention. It was a chocolate lab crated in the back of a truck.

As I approached, two guys ran out of the restaurant: "Do you want the dog? Take the dog." My husband replied, "No thanks, we have 2 dogs already." I shared his sentiments until the guy said, "We are going to DISPOSE of the dog after breakfast. So taking the dog makes less work for us."

I began yelling "Excuse me? What do you mean dispose of the dog?" The guy told us that Buster was a hopeless hunting dog that they poured a lot of money into, and it was just easier to DISPOSE of him rather than find him a home. I said to my husband, "Put the dog in the car. We'll find him a home after we get back, but I cannot leave the dog."

Hubby was not pleased but still threw him in the back seat of the car with me. The dog was scared and just wanted to be held. We arrived home introduced the dogs, put him through the pet tests (hug, food) and he passed with flying colors. Buster loved our dogs and wouldn't leave our sides no matter where we went. It was obvious that this non-hunting, water-hating, can’t-retrieve-a-ball lab was sure he was in the right spot.

The lab rescue called saying someone wanted the dog. My husband's eyes welled after he hung up the phone. "I can't do it. He has to stay. He became a part of the family the minute we put him in our car." Buster is the only thing from Waffle House we don't regret leaving with.
