In 2013, my fur buddy Calypso, a spunky 4-year-old calico, developed a cancerous tumor that appeared out of nowhere. I had to make the heartbreaking decision to put her down two weeks after my birthday.
Calypso had been mine since she was a week old, and I was too heartbroken to even consider another pet.

Two months later, my mother talked me into going to a local shelter “just to look.” I had seen photos of the available cats and knew that, if I were to get one, I wanted a black-and-white male, the polar opposite of my Calypso.
I chose the name Odysseus, though obviously I knew I could not end up “just looking.”
I walked in and was handed the cat I wanted to see. Odysseus immediately settled in with her head nestled on my shoulder and started purring louder than any cat I had ever heard.
I was hooked.
The day before I was scheduled to pick him up, I learned “he” was actually a “she.” It didn’t matter. Odysseus became Cleopatra, aka Clepto Cleo, and she has been my faithful snuggle buddy and daily source of entertainment since she came home.
She is exactly what my heart needed to heal.
