Last July with no warning, we lost our baby Daisy. She had a heart attack at only seven years old. She died in my arms.

I was heartbroken, devastated. I was laid off from my job the day before and then I lose my baby. If I hadn't been laid off, she would have passed alone, not in the arms of her mommy. I didn't eat for days. I didn't care if I ever took another breath.

We adopted her at about a year old. She had been neglected and eventually abandoned. She was our baby. Everyone loved her. She was beautiful. She was half chow and half golden retriever.

While looking online at rescue sites, I found a litter of chow retriever puppies almost ready for adoption. We didn't have Daisy as a puppy, and I always missed that.

My husband was game on getting another dog whenever I was ready. Problem was the puppies were in South Carolina and we live in Pennsylvania. I had to take a chance. The rescue that had the puppies did not normally adopt their puppies out of state. Thankfully, they made an exception and gave us pick of the litter!

We drove over 600 miles one way to see the puppies. There were nine in total. One was determined to make an impression on us. She literally threw the other puppies to the side to get to us. She was the one.

She made the 600-mile trek back to Pennsylvania with us. On the way home, we saw a double rainbow. My husband and I both said, at the same time, that the rainbow was a sign Daisy had sent us another baby to love. It was only two weeks after losing Daisy, and it was a crazy thing to do but god was she worth it.

She is so loving. We named her Dixie. This will be her second Christmas with us. In a way, I think she saved me as much as we saved her. I would urge anyone to adopt through a rescue. Every dog deserves a furever home.
