I run a small farm animal rescue and agreed to take in two pregnant mares. However, there was a younger horse bonded to them, and the previous owners wanted that horse to go as well. I didn’t want to take another horse—especially a young stallion—but I agreed. It turned out the “stallion” was actually a filly, and I was elated. After a long drive, we brought them all back to my farm.

One mare was friendly, another was scared, and the third was an approximately six-month-old filly who had never been touched. We worked patiently to gain their trust and restore their health. That little filly quickly began winning my heart. We had an instant connection.

One day, I was sitting in the field beside her when she laid down, placed her head in my lap, and fell sound asleep. In that moment, I knew she had to stay with me. My horse at the time was in his 30s and nearing retirement. This mare was everything I thought I didn’t want in a horse, but she completely stole my heart.
I was approved by the board of directors of the rescue to officially adopt her. Over the past five and a half years, our bond has grown even stronger. She is now green-broke to ride, participates in events with kids, and is the best-minded horse I have ever owned. She handles everything with grace and doesn’t have a mean bone in her body.

This year, we completed our second off-site trail ride, and she handled it like a champion. She has attended horse shows, trail rides, and public outings with confidence. And yes, to this day, she still lays her head in my lap to nap sometimes.
