I'm a nurse now, but I used to work for a veterinarian, and everyone around me knows that I am an animal lover. Well, late one night, I got a call from a friend who was out of town and practically begging me to call this friend of hers I didn't know who was in need of "help". Not knowing what this was about, I dialed the friend's number and was met with a frantic sounding woman who was out in a hay field a few miles from our ranch. Someone had dumped a mother cat and six solid black kittens on the roadside with a single can of tuna. She had gotten the mother but couldn't catch the kittens.

So, at midnight, I joined this stranger with a large bass net and spent the next three hours catching all six kittens. I spent the next several weeks finding them homes, one at a time (difficult with black cats), and I finally got down to two kittens, who I had thought were both female.

I had two friends who each wanted a female, and I thought the timing couldn't have been better. Well, it turns out that upon better inspection, one was a male, and no one wanted him. So I kept the kitten, who was quite fuzzy, and he became ranch cat #9.

My fiance is a cat hater but quickly warmed to the kitten and named him "Bear" for his resemblance. Tragedy struck when Bear disappeared only six weeks after we'd decided to keep him (and take him to the vet, and treat him for an eye ulcer). My fiance was inconsolable, but as it happens, I went for a run about five weeks later and, lo and behold, there he was, in all his fuzzy glory.

He had managed to cross two railroad tracks and a crowded major highway to end up in a barn only a mile from our house, a place we had searched before. Bear is back, he is 9 months old this week, and we wouldn't trade him for the world.
