In October 2011, I spotted a cat sitting on our neighbor's lawn when I came home from work. They didn't have any cats, and he was extremely underweight with a docked ear, so I was pretty sure he was a stray. I gave him some food and water, and he ate every scrap.

When I came home the next day, I fed him again. By the third day, he let me pet him and bring him inside the house. That weekend, the weather turned cold, and my wife and I decided to let him stay inside while we figured out what to do with him.

After we were certain he didn't have a home, we decided to adopt him and named him Mouse. I had noticed that all of his legs were crooked, so when we took him to the vet for a checkup, I requested X-rays.

Nothing could have prepared us for the results.

His X-rays showed that all four of his legs were riddled with buckshot. He had been shot with a shotgun, causing multiple fractures in every leg and shattering one of his paws. The veterinarian estimated that he had likely been shot about six months earlier. How he survived remains a mystery to us all.

We have had Mouse for three years now, and we're happy to report that despite everything he has been through, he is doing very well. His story is a powerful reminder of the resilience animals possess and the life-changing impact of compassion.

James and his blind brother, William, were found abandoned on the street when they were just four weeks old. James was born with one blind eye that started to cause him discomfort. Over time, that eye became increasingly painful and irritated. James is the seeing-eye cat for his brother, making his condition even more urgent to treat.
