In December 2025, my apartment building caught fire while I was not home, but my beautiful and beloved dogs were. They did not survive the fire. The grief has been overwhelming, but I’ve found some comfort in feeling grateful for the time I had to love and be loved by them.

I hold on to the belief that one day they will come back to me in some form. Kami, my American Akita — whose name meant Divine or Spirit in Japanese — was my best friend and my guardian.

Shortly after the fire, I began volunteering at a local cat rescue. While working there, I immediately bonded with Saint, the name given to him by the rescue. The owner told me his story: he had been a stray who evaded capture around the property for seven months. Then, just two days before I began volunteering, he simply walked through the front door and settled in.

The shelter owner gifted him to me for Christmas, and I can’t help but feel that Kami sent him there to meet me. Saint is blind in one eye and is always by my side, offering head butts and hugs.
