We came across eight kittens that were only a few days old, we think. We worked hard to save them, even though we had never cared for kittens this young before. It was incredibly difficult, but we were committed to giving them every chance we could.

The shelters and rescues in our area were at capacity, so we posted in local groups asking for advice and any hands-on help people could offer. Tiffany, Kristen, and Pam all stepped up to help.
We were definitely in over our heads. We already had three cats and a tortoise of our own, and keeping everyone separated at first was no small task. Bottle-feeding the kittens and stimulating them so they could go to the bathroom was all completely new to us.

There were many tears and very little sleep along the way. Having to let Lucy go was especially hard on our 11-year-old because Lucy was her favorite.
In the end, three of the eight kittens made it. Pam adopted Ricky Bobby, a black bobtail boy, while we decided to keep Storm, a male tabby, and Wolf, a black-and-white male. Storm and Wolf are incredibly bonded.

Our three resident cats are still getting used to them. Louie, our male Russian Blue rescue, loves them to pieces. Jeffrey, our senior tuxedo rescue, is deaf and rarely hears them coming. Let's just say he tolerates them.
Sunny, our dilute calico rescue, is still quite bothered by the newcomers and makes it very clear that she isn't a fan most of the time. It's a work in progress.

Everyone is also fascinated by Taco, our one-year-old male Russian tortoise.
We are so grateful for the new friends we made throughout this experience and for my husband, who puts up with our bleeding hearts and our desire to save every animal we can. We're also grateful to the kitty distribution center for hazing us with a crash course involving eight kittens all at once.

We will never forget the five kittens we lost along the way.
Rest in peace, Manatee, Missy, Stanley, Lucy, and Dwarfy.
