Growing up, I was afraid of dogs after being bitten twice. That was until two dogs came into my life in the most unexpected ways. It was my birthday, and my friend called to tell me to come to her house to pick up my gift. I arrived about an hour later, only to be greeted by a little pit bull puppy.

He was badly beaten up. My friend's brother had pulled the puppy from a yard after witnessing people throwing him at older, more aggressive pit bulls. He was cut up and injured. There was no doubt in my mind that he was coming home with me.

Here I was, scared of dogs. And here was this puppy, scared of people and other dogs.

A month later, a Rottweiler mix came into my life. She was lying at the end of my driveway, lethargic and helpless. She was such a tiny puppy. I took her in, hoping that maybe Sampson would calm down with another dog around.

The next day, she started yelping and crying out in pain, so we took her to the veterinarian. They discovered plastic, bones, foil, and other trash in her stomach. She later developed Frog Leg Syndrome.

During the eight years I had them, they became my saviors. They taught me not to be afraid of dogs anymore, and they brought to the surface my dream of becoming a veterinarian. Some dreams simply take longer than others.

They are now growing old with another family because my life took a horrible turn. I miss them every day and think about them often. They were the best dogs anyone could ever ask for.
