I can be antisocial and go for long periods without leaving my apartment except for work. I really only spend time with one friend or my sister, who shares the apartment with me. And then there is Hope.

Our bond began when my sister called me frantically, begging me to set up a vet appointment. She told me about a tiny, three- to four-week-old kitten who had been found at her workplace after somehow going through some of the machinery.

Before I had even seen her, I tried to find somewhere else for her to go. She was so young, and at the time, I saw her as a burden. But no place could take her, so I made an appointment with the veterinarian down the street.

The moment I laid eyes on her, everything changed.

A mostly white cat with dark grey markings on its head and a dark striped grey tail stands upright on a weathered wooden windowsill.

She was a tiny thing, no bigger than the palm of my hand. She was bloody and barely moving. I immediately knew I couldn’t give her up.

When I looked at my sister and asked what we should name her, we both knew it had to be Hope. We hoped she would pull through.

What I didn’t foresee was the bond I would develop with this little girl. She reminds me in so many ways how thankful she is.

Just now, Hope was relaxing on my chest when I started crying while watching one of my shows on the computer. She looked back at me and meowed twice before reaching out with her paws and trying to turn around to face me.

I moved her closer to see what she wanted while I was still crying. She was trying to reach my face so she could pull me close with her paws and give me a kiss on the lips.

Then she kneaded my face until I stopped crying, purring louder and louder the entire time.

Sometimes I forget that it is the little things, like Hope comforting me, that make me realize something important.

I needed her just as much as she needed me.
