U.S. Soldiers Return Birthday Cake To Italian Woman 77 Years Later

We all do things that we regret, but every once in a while, we have the opportunity to make things right again.

It seems as if a group of US soldiers had that opportunity, and it came about in a rather unique way.

It all started during an event known as "One Community: Remembering April 28, 1945."

According to a Facebook post by the U.S. Army Garrison Italy, soldiers were in the city of Vicenza for that event and they had something interesting up their sleeve.

Americans had come to the village in 1945 and at that time, Meri Mion was only 13. Because of the activity going on in the area during World War II, she was hiding in an attic in a small commune in northeastern Italy.

She had always had difficulties because of what happened during those years. Shots were being fired near her house by Germans, and she just couldn't get the sound out of her head.

As a special visitor at the event, Meri was now 89 years old. The US Army Garrison Italy had a special treat for her now that she was about to reach her 90th birthday.

You see, her mother had baked her cake for her 13th birthday and put it on the windowsill to cool. The U.S. soldiers who were passing by helped themselves to the cake and ate it, never giving her an opportunity to even have a taste.

U.S. Army Sgt. Peter Wallis, of Seabeck, Washington was on hand at the event to present her with her 90th birthday cake. It was a special moment for everyone.

Mion accepted the cake and said: "Tomorrow, I will eat that dessert with all my family remembering this wonderful day that I will never forget."

How sweet!
