Texas is ramping up its efforts to eradicate illegal cockfighting, a brutal blood sport that continues to thrive despite being outlawed across the United States. Recent raids in multiple counties have led to the rescue of hundreds of birds and the arrest of dozens of individuals, highlighting the persistent challenge law enforcement faces in combating this inhumane practice.

Animal Wellness Action reports that operations in Van Zandt, Potter, and San Jacinto counties underscore the ongoing battle to uphold animal welfare laws and protect communities from associated criminal activities.

Surge in Law Enforcement Raids

In Van Zandt County, a significant bust resulted in the rescue of over 100 gamecocks kept in deplorable conditions. These birds were discovered in cramped, filthy cages, many showing severe neglect and injuries indicative of training for fights. Similar operations in Potter, San Jacinto, Cherokee, and Lynn counties have led to the seizure of thousands of birds and the arrest of numerous suspects facing charges ranging from animal cruelty to organized crime.

According to The Dallas Morning News, these actions reflect a broader statewide crackdown aimed at eradicating the blood sport that thrives despite being outlawed across all 50 states.

Legislative Push for Stronger Laws

To bolster these efforts, advocates are championing the Fighting Inhumane Gambling and High-Risk Trafficking (FIGHT) Act, a comprehensive bill designed to strengthen the enforcement of existing animal fighting laws. The FIGHT Act aims to ban online gambling on cockfights, allow courts to seize property used in these activities, and prevent the shipment of fighting roosters through the mail.

The Texas Public Radio highlights that the bill is supported by a bipartisan coalition of lawmakers and endorsed by over 700 agencies and organizations, including the National Sheriffs’ Association.

Wayne Pacelle, fomer CEO of Humane Society of the United States, told Animal Wellness Action that federal legislation is important in strengthening these efforts.

“Cockfighting is barbarism, and it’s tied to other crimes degrading the safety of our communities,” Pacelle stated.

He advocates for the FIGHT Act, which also provides mechanisms for law-abiding citizens to take legal action against cockfighters when authorities are slow to act.

Organized Crime and Cross-Border Trafficking

Cockfighting in Texas is often linked to broader criminal enterprises, including drug trafficking, money laundering, and illegal arms trade. Mexican cartels play a significant role in this illicit trade, facilitating the shipment of fighting birds and other contraband across borders. Animal Wellness Action reports that these connections not only perpetuate animal cruelty but also pose substantial threats to public safety and community well-being.

A federal enforcement action uncovered roosters deeply hidden within passenger vehicles, underscoring the sophisticated methods used by traffickers. These operations demonstrate the urgent need for comprehensive legal measures to disrupt and dismantle these criminal networks effectively.

Opposition to Stronger Laws

Despite widespread support for maintaining the illegality of cockfighting, some lawmakers push for the decriminalization of the sport, arguing that it would free up law enforcement resources to address more severe crimes. U.S. Rep. Josh Brecheen of Oklahoma has expressed support for reducing penalties, suggesting that law enforcement should focus on more pressing issues related to the border crisis and violent activities. However, this stance faces significant opposition from animal welfare advocates who highlight the intrinsic cruelty of the sport and its links to organized crime.

According to NonDoc, public opinion strongly opposes cockfighting, with surveys showing that over 90 percent of Oklahomans support the existing ban. This overwhelming consensus aligns with the stance of animal rights organizations, which argue that cockfighting not only inflicts unnecessary suffering on animals but also serves as a gateway to other criminal enterprises such as drug trafficking and illegal gambling.

Moving Forward: A Comprehensive Approach

The fight against illegal cockfighting in Texas requires a multifaceted approach that combines rigorous law enforcement with robust legislative support. The proposed FIGHT Act represents a crucial step in this direction, offering the tools needed to tackle the complex web of animal cruelty and organized crime associated with cockfighting. Animal welfare organizations, law enforcement agencies, and supportive lawmakers must work collaboratively to ensure that these laws are enacted and effectively enforced. By doing so, Texas can lead the way in protecting animals and safeguarding communities from the detrimental effects of this violent and inhumane practice.

Texas remains steadfast in its mission to eliminate illegal cockfighting through persistent law enforcement actions and the pursuit of stronger legislative measures. The combined efforts of advocates, officials, and supportive citizens are essential in ensuring that this barbaric practice is eradicated once and for all.
