Animals are still living at a California rescue under federal investigation. The Attorney General can remove them today.
Miranda's Rescue, a nonprofit animal rescue in Humboldt County, California, built its public image on saving animals in need. But since late June 2026, what investigators have found on its property tells a very different story — one involving buried animal remains, a federal investigation, and more than 700 animals that cannot be accounted for.2,8
What Law Enforcement Found
The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office opened its investigation in June 2026 following reports of animal welfare violations.2 Excavations at the property uncovered buried animal remains, and the FBI joined the effort as the scope of what investigators found became clear.8 A follow-up release from the Sheriff's Office confirmed the investigation was continuing to expand.7
Throughout all of it, animals have remained on the property — alive, vulnerable, and with no independent oversight of their care.
Workers Who Saw It From the Inside
Former employees and volunteers described conditions at Miranda's Rescue that bore no resemblance to the organization's public-facing image. People who joined because they believed in the mission came away shaken by what they witnessed on the ground — conditions that were systematically hidden from donors and the public.1
A Formal Demand for State Intervention
In August 2026, Jennifer Raymond — a former insider with direct knowledge of how Miranda's Rescue operated — filed a formal whistleblower complaint with the California Attorney General's office.3,6 Raymond's complaint is explicit: she is asking the Attorney General to seek an emergency court-appointed receiver with the power to remove the remaining animals from the facility, secure the organization's financial records, and preserve its charitable assets.4 She is also calling for the full dissolution of the organization.5,6
Her complaint raises serious concerns on two fronts — the welfare of animals still living at the facility, and the integrity of donor funds contributed to support their care.4
The Attorney General Has the Authority — and the Evidence
The California Attorney General holds direct legal authority over charitable organizations in the state, including the power to investigate misuse of charitable assets and to petition courts for emergency intervention. A formal whistleblower complaint is already on file. Law enforcement has been on the property for months. The grounds exist to act now.
A court-ordered receiver could remove these animals to safety immediately and ensure that donated funds meant for their care are fully accounted for. Donors gave in good faith. The animals have no voice in what comes next.
Every Day Without Action Is Another Day These Animals Wait
Months into an active federal and county investigation, the animals at Miranda's Rescue are still there. Their fate depends on what the Attorney General does next.
Sign the petition now to urge the California Attorney General to petition the court immediately for an emergency receiver — one with the power to remove these animals to safety and hold this organization accountable.
