Veterans with possible cancer are falling through an administrative gap — and the VA has the power to close it today.
When a veteran's breast imaging from a community provider never made it back to the VA, weeks passed. Surgery was delayed. The VA Office of Inspector General documented that failure at the VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System in Aurora — and it is far from an isolated case.1
Across the country, veterans who are being evaluated for possible cancer face a dangerous gap in how the VA tracks and coordinates their care. The problem has a specific, fixable source: the VA's community-care consult tool does not classify suspected cancer as a complex or chronic condition. That means the enhanced oversight that would trigger structured follow-through simply does not activate — not until a diagnosis is confirmed, and often not even then.
The Window That Matters Most
The period between a worrying finding and a confirmed diagnosis is when coordination is most critical. It is also when the current system offers the least protection. Research published in Federal Practitioner found that dedicated registered nurse care coordination for veterans with possible malignancy led to faster evaluations and fewer patients lost to follow-up.4 Structure works. Its absence has consequences.
A 2022 VA OIG investigation traced serious oral cancer care delays at the Veterans Health Care System of the Ozarks directly to community care coordination failures.5 That case produced specific recommendations. None have led to systemic change in how suspected cancer is flagged in the consult process.
A Pattern of Documented Failures
The VA OIG has confirmed these problems extend well beyond any single facility. A June 2026 audit found that neither VA nor community care consults reliably met timeliness benchmarks system-wide.3 An April 2026 inspection at the VA Fayetteville Coastal Healthcare System in North Carolina found consult management problems at the facility level.2 And a separate June 2026 audit found errors in community care eligibility determinations — adding more friction for veterans who are already navigating uncertainty about their health.6
Each failure point — image transfer, consult timeliness, eligibility, coordination — carries its own documented risk. For a veteran with suspected cancer, any one of them can mean weeks of delay at the worst possible time.
One Change. Real Impact.
Veterans with confirmed chronic or complex conditions already receive enhanced coordination through the VA's consult tool. Extending that same standard to suspected cancer would mean that a flagged concern triggers structured follow-through immediately — before a confirmed diagnosis, during the window when speed is most consequential.
This does not require new facilities or new funding. It requires a classification update. The VHA's Acting Under Secretary for Health has the authority to make it.
We are calling on the Acting Under Secretary for Health to add suspected cancer to the list of complex and chronic conditions in the VHA's community-care consult tool — so that no veteran's possible malignancy falls through an administrative gap while they wait.
Sign the petition now and demand the VA give veterans with suspected cancer the coordinated care they deserve.
