Help care for mistreated horses

About 200,000 horses enter rescues each year often due to no fault of their own. They are neglected, injured, or abandoned and in desperate need of medical treatment.

The organizations that take these horses in work tirelessly to stabilize, heal, and restore them. Each horse requires months of intensive care, including veterinary treatment, specialized diets, supplies, and round-the-clock monitoring. This places a financial burden on rescues and limits their capacity to help more animals in need.

How To Help:

That’s why Greater Good Charities is working alongside dedicated rescue groups to provide food, supplies, medical care, and other essential aid to these horses.

Your donation will help feed, care, and provide essential supplies. These are just some of the supplies we will send on your behalf, dependent upon what is needed most:

  • Wound Spray & Fly Spray (Shelter's Favorite)
  • Ulcer medication (highly requested)
  • Wormer, Fly Sheets & Fly Masks
  • Stable Blankets & Jolly Balls (and other toys)
  • Salt & Mineral Blocks (Horses' Favorite)
  • Cotton Lead Ropes & Rope Halters
  • Flat Back Buckets & Slow Feed Hay Nets

With the right care, most of these horses are able to recover from their injuries and live the rest of their lives stress and pain-free. Their future depends on the efforts of dedicated rehabilitation staff who are ready to provide them with everything they need to survive.

Impact:

Diederick

He is a regal, 25-year-old gelding, with a wise old face, and a loving heart. He has known a great deal of abuse in his life and finally found his 'safe place to land'. Diederick is challenged with many health issues, among them respiratory conditions. Your donations are providing the medication he needs to breathe easy, and he is so grateful for your support.

Hazel

Your donations helped a senior horse named Hazel that was rescued from a kill pen get the treatment she needed to heal and become a companion to another blind rescue horse.

Their caretakers shared that they, "totally rely on each other."

Thank you for your support!

David

This sweet fella absolutely adores his new hay bag! He waits for it to be filled every day and then stands like a good boy during his meals.

David has a condylar and sesamoid fracture with screws in his front leg, so the hay bags are an absolute blessing for him.

Walter

He was seriously injured on the track and endured three surgeries to repair severed tendons in his front left leg.

During healing, Walter was confined to a stall so that leg could heal. Staff utilize toys to engage and entertain him. It was hard to confine this young horse to a stall, but essential for his appropriate healing.

Walter is the perfect example of a young horse who responds to the stimulation of 'playing' with a yoga ball. He will walk towards, it and 'kick' it and interact and respond to it. These balls and toys are helpful for the rehabilitation of the younger horses, and - as you might imagine -- often get chomped on (!) and deflate. The Society is always grateful to have a supply of engaging toys like these on hand.

Harry and Marv

These mini horses were welcomed to their new home with fresh hay and water, and made sure they were comfortable in their new surroundings.

As these two settled in, they received intake exams and received a re-feeding program so they could *lose* weight. (Most of our horses arrived underweight, but some - in fact - have been fed the wrong diet and are overweight when they come to the MSSPA.)

Out of sight in this photo are the hay bags in the two stalls where staff was able to better regulate the amount of hay these two adorable minis received.

Ripley

Gentle Giants rescued Ripley from an auction in deplorable condition. Ripley was so emaciated that it was evident she had little time left.

Gentle Giants, trained in the recovery of starved horses, focused on getting Ripley healed. Ripley is now fully rehabilitated, happy, healthy, and ready to find her forever home.

Toomuchtoosoon

He is a 20-year-old gelding who has been with the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF) for 14 years.

His owner passed away and as part of her wishes in her estate planning he came to live with TRF.

He is living his best life now thanks to contributions from people like you!
