Animal shelters in Louisiana and Alabama are overflowing with homeless dogs and cats as new ones arrive weekly. Highly adoptable animals are at risk of euthanasia due to lack of space and adopters. 

That's why we sponsor a flight each month, with your support, to save lives. Help us fly dozens of shelter pets to freedom on next month's flight on January 13.

The animals on this flight are at-risk pets - including heartworm-positive dogs; without the flight, they might never find their loving homes due to the overcrowding that often happens in shelters. Sending these pets from under-resourced shelters to shelters with empty spaces will give them a second chance at life AND the adoption they deserve.

Save a Heart is a life-saving initiative of Greater Good Charities that aims to reduce shelter euthanasia in overcrowded shelters by preventing and treating heartworm disease in shelter dogs, while transporting adoptable asymptomatic heartworm-positive dogs to safety.  

Together with Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health, The Animal Rescue Site, Save a Heart transports hundreds of asymptomatic heartworm-positive dogs to new homes each year.

Meet Brooklyn!

The 1.5-year-old Lab mix loves to be around people and other dogs. She’s asymptomatic heartworm positive and currently on her treatment journey—a process she’s handling with patience and resilience.

One of Brooklyn’s favorite parts of the day is play group time. She thrives around other dogs, showing a social, upbeat energy that makes her a joy to be around.

Thanks to coordinated care and support, Brooklyn is looking ahead to finishing her heartworm treatment in New Jersey. With treatment on track and her personality shining through, she’s ready for what comes next—a stable routine, continued healing, and the chance to settle into a home where she can keep being herself.

Meet Lady!

Lady is a young Beagle mix who is looking for someone to love. She is asymptomatic heartworm positive, but it doesn’t slow her down or define her. Lady moves through each day with quiet confidence and a lot of love to give.

Meet Maxwell!

Maxwell is a German Shepherd mix with a friendly, steady presence and an easygoing way about him. He is asymptomatic heartworm positive and on track to complete his treatment in New Jersey, a step forward that’s opening the door to his next chapter.

Surrendered through no fault of his own, Maxwell has remained trusting and people-focused. 

With treatment underway and his warm personality leading the way, he’s ready for stability, engagement, and a home that sees his full potential.

In shelters across the country, highly adoptable dogs and cats are euthanized just because the shelters are overcrowded. In other areas, shelters have a shortage of adoptable pets. We're transporting these pets to shelters where they're immediately adopted.
