As a young girl growing up, I knew I wanted to do something with animals as a career when I was older. I would always rescue that stray cat or lost dog in my town. By the time I was 16, I also knew I wanted a dog of my own.

When I went to my local shelter, my mom had requirements for me. I could only get a dog if it was small and not a puppy. I looked through the whole shelter and there was only one small dog there that day. She was a skinny white chihuahua with big boobs sagging down. Her name was Sparkles.

I looked at her and she sat in the back of the cage with her face turned away from me, but she was looking at me from the corner of her eye. I took her out, and she was so happy to not be in that kennel, she was running around the "get acquainted" room and her tail was wagging nonstop. I knew it was meant to be.

Filling out her paperwork, they told me that she had been here a few months and no one wanted her due to her saggy boobs. They also said she had probably been a breeder due to how big they were. I didn't really care because I was going to spay her anyway.

That first month was hard. Maisy (her new name) would pee on the floor when I would raise my voice or look at her funny. Her vet bills were over $1000 because I spayed her, cleaned her teeth, and she had a hernia from too many litters of puppies that needed to be removed.

Now I proudly say I own a sassy chihuahua and she is always by my side.
