I was happy with my family of four rescue cats (and dog), but I also wanted to support the efforts of my city's great new animal control that is working diligently with area rescues to be no-kill. And I knew that if I ever got a fifth cat, it would be what my friends call a "dented can."

In September 2014, I saw this one-eyed boy, dubbed Sinbad the Pirate, posted on the animal control networking page. He was an unclaimed stray but was already neutered, so he started as someone's cat and was supposed to be extremely sweet.

I learned that the rescue I work with wanted to pull him but needed a foster home. Fosters for adult cats are hard to come by, so I agreed to take him.

Well, Sinbad turned out to be far from any "poor little one-eyed kitty" people need to feel sorry for! Vets estimated him to be 2-3 years old and said he'd been missing the eye from birth (a condition known as severe micropthalmia); his other eye isn't quite normal, either, though at this point, he seems to have good vision.

He is indeed very friendly, but he's also one confident, rambunctious trouble-maker! My other cats are social, but he was always on the go and would jump them just for something to do, and they hated it. At least he was good with my dog!

I was really desperate to get him rehomed at first, though I knew it was unlikely. Over time, with careful management of integration and trying holistic remedies as well, things have gotten much better, if not yet perfect. But eventually I came to realize that I really love him and that the thought of having to give him to anybody else horrified me.

He is the first to greet me at the door, follows me around like a dog, and loves to cuddle. So before Christmas, I messaged the rescue and told them I wanted to adopt him. Now (admittedly no surprise to my friends!), Sinbad the troublesome foster is home forever.
