Food is often the single biggest expense shelters must cover. A soft bed and a full belly can go a long way for the well-being of shelter dogs and cats. Through proper vaccination, animals' risk of disease is cut down or eliminated, leaving shelter volunteers more time to find good homes for these pets. Animals that are healthy, happy, and well-fed stand a much better chance of being adopted.

Meet Apple Jack. 

Apple Jack’s story started out as many do in Alabama. He was abandoned by the side of the road as a young puppy. Someone tried to kill him by shooting him in the head with a BB gun, but he survived - with the BB intact. As you can imagine, Apple Jack has a bit of anxiety toward people so he doesn’t always make the best impression at adoption events. Thanks to donated care packages from GreaterGood, Troy Animal Rescue Project was able to send supplies like treats, toys and blankets with Apple Jack to adoption events to help make him more comfortable.

Meet Pixie. 

Pixie’s story is one of unimaginable cruelty—and incredible resilience. He was brought to safety by a brave woman who witnessed a horrifying act: a group of children tormenting a cat in her neighborhood and then setting him on fire. When Pixie arrived at Pennsyvania SPCA's hospical, their veterinary team was heartbroken by what they saw. Nearly 80% of his tail had been severely damaged—injuries consistent with being burned. Though we may never know every detail of what he endured, we do know this: Pixie suffered terribly at the hands of others. And he did not deserve any of it. Despite the pain, Pixie has remained remarkably gentle and trusting. He underwent emergency surgery to amputate his tail, and he is now recovering under the watchful care of our medical team. His wounds are healing, and so is his spirit. Care packages gifted to Pennsyvania SPCA are helping Pixie recover in comfort.

Meet Slim Jim. 

When Slim Jim arrived at an animal hospital he was barely clinging to life. His bones jutted sharply beneath his skin, and his eyes were dull from exhaustion and pain. So desperate was his hunger that he had been eating rubber bands and household debris to survive. Upon notification, Animal Law Enforcement officers quickly transferred Slim Jim to our Pennsyvania SPCA for urgent care. There, a full medical exam revealed he was battling much more than hunger. He suffered from painful arthritis, untreated ear infections, intestinal parasites, and Lyme disease. This chronic neglect had taken a severe toll on his health. Staff immediately began a slow and carefully monitored refeeding plan. Alongside nutritional support, Slim Jim was administered all necessary medications to address his infections and chronic illnesses. With each day, Slim Jim grew stronger. Today, Slim Jim is a happy, energetic dog enjoying his second chance at life. Gifts to shelters, like Care Packs, help them save lives.
