Southern Californians Still Reeling From Impacts of Multiple Wildfires

Powerful Santa Ana winds fueled the massively destructive Eaton and Palisades fires in early January, and then, once those were largely contained, helped the Hughes Fire explode and add onto the chaos. Tens of thousands of people have had to evacuate due to the fires, while more than 15,000 structures, including homes, have been burned. At least 27 people have also died.

While the fires are now mostly contained, people and pets who have lost everything are only beginning the recovery process. Local shelters also report taking in hundreds of pets, many of which are severely burned and still require medical attention and food. These shelters and residents continue to need our help.

Greater Good Charities’ Disaster Response team was on the ground in L.A. within hours of the fires' outbreak. Their response continues to evolve to meet the growing needs:

• Aid Distribution: The team established three warehouses across Southern California, allowing them to efficiently distribute food, emergency packs, and other survival supplies to communities in need.
• Pet Food Distribution: They have delivered more than 3 million pet meals to shelter partners, including Pasadena Humane, ensuring that pets are not forgotten.  
• Animal Care: We are preparing to transport pets that were previously in shelters from overcrowded animal shelters to make room for displaced and injured animals. Our teams are also deploying cash grants, pharmaceuticals, and feed for traumatized animals, including horses who were evacuated, lost, or displaced due to the wildfires and to Pasadena Humane, which operates a veterinary hospital and ICU.
• Wildlife Support: Disaster response experts are assessing wildlife impacts across burn zones, ready to intervene with resources and support.

Updates From the Field

January 23: Greater Good Charities has been on the ground, working with partners to provide aid for people and pets displaced by the fires, which have burned more than 15,000 structures and are still prompting evacuation orders for thousands of people. At recent events - including the LA Strong distribution event at SoFi Stadium - GGC teams have handed out pet food, emergency pet packs, relief kits for people, survival supplies, and comfort items, like blankets, to those in need.
