When hurricanes strike, those in the direct path can have their homes washed away by storm surge, which is becoming more of a threat as sea levels rise. Far from the coast, though, extreme flooding is also possible from heavy rainfall, as seen during 2024's devastating Hurricane Helene. Communities in the path of the storms can also experience wind damage, power outages, and limited access to supplies.
