Hurricane Melissa, a rare Category 5 hurricane, made landfall in New Hope, Jamaica as one of the strongest hurricanes in history.
Hurricane Melissa has left a trail of devastation across the Caribbean, impacting millions of people and causing catastrophic damage to crops and the bees that pollinate them. While the true extent of the destruction is still being assessed, Jamaica has been declared a disaster area, this heavy agricultural hit compounding last year’s losses from Hurricane Beryl.
With an estimated 67,000 bee colonies on Jamaica alone, tens of thousands have been impacted by Melissa across Jamaica, Cuba and Haiti, leaving billions of bees in danger of starvation.
Our partner Greater Good Charities is working to provide emergency aid for bees and beekeepers. In collaboration with a network of local partners, they stand ready to send bee sugar and pollen substitute to Jamaica, so beekeepers can sustain their remaining hives in the coming weeks and prevent further devastation to these ecosystems.
